I’m a fairy tale fanatic. There. I said it. I’m obsessed with fairy tales. From classic Western tales like Little Red Riding Hood and Rumpelstiltskin, and Russian tales like Little Daughter of the Snow and Baba Yaga, to modern adaptations like the Disney movies, or other films like Pan’s Labyrinth, there’s just something about them that I can’t get enough of. I’m not sure what inspired that love, but I’ve always enjoyed reading fairy tales all throughout my life. When I was younger, I was captivated by the magic and the fantasy, but now as I’m older, I’m finding I’m much more interested in the scholarly side to fairy tales. A recent hobby of mine has been searching out fairy and folk tales outside of the well-known Western tales. I purchased a book of Russian fairy tales (Arthur Ransom’s Old Peter’s Russian Tales) on Amazon back in October that I’m absolutely fascinated with, and I’ve been scouring book stores everywhere for anything pertaining to cultures outside of my own.
There’s so much out there in the art world, movie world, fashion world… everywhere really, that have ties back to simple folk and fairy tales, and I always find it interesting to see how they’re interpreted and represented in new ways. So I was definitely excited to stumble upon Tim Walker’s photo shoot for Vogue UK (March 2009) which is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s tale The Snow Queen. (For the interested, you can read the fairy tale online here.)

(Apologies this entry is a few days late. I was off on an impromptu shopping adventure to the States, and my scheduled posting failed me. Bad Wordpress, bad! No cookie for you.)
The challenge: My parents moved to (a town just outside of) Toronto, built a new home, and are now in the process of decorating. While I don’t technically live with them (I’m only crashing May-August), I still have a bedroom of my own in the house. Now, to decorate “my” bedroom. It is their house though, so I have some very strict guidelines and have to work with what’s already present in the room. I’m lucky in that what’s there is already pretty awesome (white furniture, light gray walls), but it’s convincing the mother that my additions to the room will look good, while still in keeping with the mother’s over all style so the room doesn’t feel out of place with the rest of the house.
What I want: purple. And the mother’s thoughts? No. She says that now though. She doesn’t think she likes purple, but I’m determined to sway her, and I’m confident that I can.

For those of us in Canada who live off of HGTV’s home decorating shows on television, Sarah Richardson is a name that can’t easily be ignored. I’m a huge fan of her work; she has a very classic and timeless style, and I love how she uses the colour white is such creative ways. She’s definitely a designer I admire and look up to and if I ever had even half the talent she has in her left pinky finger, well, I’d be quite the talent!
In addition to running a highly successful design firm (Sarah Richardson Design), Sarah has also done numerous television shows over the years, all of which I watch pretty much obsessively – Room Service (which was slightly before my time), design inc., Sarah’s House, and her newest is Sarah’s Cottage. The show just wrapped up its 6 episode run on Tuesday night and it chronicled Sarah’s renovations of her family’s summer cottage. And let me just say, the final outcome is to die for!

Ah, April 2009. Such a monumental month for me ‘life’ wise. It was the month I finished my thesis, the month I had my grad recital, the month I finished my undergrad, the month I got my first job in my field, and the month I moved out of Nova Scotia for the first time since I was 6 years old. Of course, April also brought many more light hearted things. So without further adue, viola 10 things that made me happy in April 2009 :)
1. Bones
New favourite show? New favourite show! I can’t believe I missed out for so long. (Though I suppose not getting Fox could be a half-assed excuse.) But oh my gosh, the adorable! David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel have such amazing chemistry. Actually, the entire cast does; they’re all fantastic together. But David and Emily as Booth and Brennan go above and beyond. One of the things that makes watching television ‘couples’ so enjoyable for me is that push and pull of “Are they going to get together or aren’t they?”, and that constant sexual tension. I think that’s something the writers on this show have done really well: keeping Booth and Brennan close but simultaneously at odds. (This show so doesn’t help my massive crush on David Boreanaz. ♥)
