I Heart… Postcard from Provence
I’ve been in awe of British painter Julian Merrow-Smith for quite some time now. I stumbled upon his website Postcard from Provence a few months back and have been avidly following (and anxiously awaiting) his daily posts. What’s so special about him, you ask? Not only is he a truly gifted painter, but he paints a postcard-sized painting every single day! If that’s not astonishing and truly inspiring, I don’t know what is. I’m in awe that someone can, on a daily basis, but so involved in their artistic process and produce such a high standard of art as well. Seeing someone creating such a vast output of work is very motivating to me; I wish I had the ability, the persistence, the skill, the dedication… He definitely inspires me to want to make art and creativity a huger part of my daily life.
It’s not only the fact that he is able to paint such beautiful images on a daily basis that makes him stand out to me, it’s also the style to his work. My heart will always belong to the Impressionist movement in terms of genre.i What I love about Merrow-Smith’s art work is that he captures movement and light in a very Impressionistic way. His work is also very much infused with the Romantic landscape style as well; it has that old world charm, and a nostalgic approach to choosing his subject matter. (He predominantly focuses on landscapes painted from the Southern French countryside where he lives, and still lifes of flowers and various foods found near and around his home.)
I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: I’m completely in awe of this man and his work. Someday, I would love to own one of his pieces (he auctions them off daily), it’s just a matter of choosing which one! There are hundreds upon hundreds! Here are a few of my favourites that he’s painted only in the last year. There’s quite a handful, but I had a terrible time narrowing down which I liked the best. So many gems!
- I could fawn over Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Degas, and Manet, all day long! (»)
