I Heart… First Look At Tim Burton’s AIW
I don’t think it’s possible for me to be any more excited about Tim Burton’s upcoming film Alice in Wonderland (set for release in 2010). News has been circulating around the project for ages and even the slightest mention of it fills me with anticipation. One, because I’m a huge fan of the Alice stories, and two, because Tim Burton can do no wrong. He brings a very whimsical, eerie, experimental, and visionary quality to every film he touches and I always look forward to seeing where he will go next. In this case, his “next” being Alice in Wonderland. At long last, we have the first official glimpse into the film: a collection of six images including three promo shots of the Mad Hatter, Red Queen and White Queen, and three conceptual images of the sets. I think my heart just skipped a beat!
Alice conversing with the White Rabbit
I love the overcast and cloudy sky against the enormous animal topiaries (Flamingo! Giraffe! Butterfly! Bird!). The garden itself has a very traditional English feel structurally, but without the clean cut and rigid grooming to the plant life itself. I love the overgrown wildflowers shooting up haphazardly throughout. The whole thing definitely evokes a very somber yet otherworldly and bizarre quality.
Alice in the Garden of the Talking Flowers
The flowers remind me so much of gothic gargoyle sculptures! I love it! I can only assume they will be just as peculiar.
This one is very reminiscent of American McGee’s Alice video game. The Tweedles look so sinister! I’m also quite intrigued by the use of all these gates throughout. They definitely add to the mystery.
Brilliance. I’m getting a very Willie Wonka creepy mixed with Elijah Wood as Jonathan Safran Foer in Everything Is Illuminated vibe from Johnny Depp’s Mad Hatter. Depp is an incredibly talent actor and I’m very anxious to see how he interpts the Mad Hatter’s antics. The candy-coloured skull bow tiei makes the entire look – it’s simultaneously kooky, eccentric and playful.

Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen
Helena is such a chameleon. Her face really pulls off the extreme make-up and wild hair. Her Red Queen looks as if she were peeled directly off the back of a playing card. I also really love how they played so drastically with proportions on her character.

Anne Hathway as the White Queen
Very Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings meets high fashion. (It’s the eyebrows.)
This is such an exciting update on the project. I can’t wait to see how quickly these images will spread across the web, and light up the eyes of avid Alice in Wonderland and/or Tim Burton fans. (Actually, as I’m typing up this entry, Alice has already posted about the film as well! Her entry is here.) If these conceptual setting designs and character promos are any indication of what’s to come, I’m sure we’re all in for quite a treat. Or two. ;)

Ever since I heard Tim Burton was doing Alice in Wonderland and Johnny Depp had signed on as the mad hatter, I’ve been intrigued. It looks so interesting! Very cool, cannot wait.
