I Heart… Canada’s Next Top Model

Top Model is most definitely my guilty pleasure. I was an avid fan of America’s Next Top Model for the longest time, so I was very thrilled a few summers ago that they were bringing the reality modeling competition up north. Typically, spin-offs never quite one up the original, but in the case of Canada’s Next Top Model, it is without any word of doubt arms and legs better than its American counterparti … in my mind, anyway.

Passionate hatred of Tyra Banks aside, what I love most about Canada’s Next Top Model is that it’s honest. Yes, it’s still a reality competition, but at the basis, I feel like CNTM actually wants the girls to succeed in the fashion world and have a good modeling career.ii On CNTM, the judges give helpful comments and constructive criticism, favouritism is non-existent, the challenges have a purpose – to help the model wannabes learn about the industry and improve, and aren’t simply present as a means of product placement, they went to Toronto’s Fashion Week!… I could go on and on.

Canada's Next Top Model - Judges
The judges: (left to right) Photographer Mike Ruiz, fashion journalist Jeanne Beker, Jay Manuel, supermodel Yasmine Warsame, and Elle US fashion editor Nolé Marin.

This is why CNTM stands out to me as a competition that is taking these girls’ hopes and dreams seriously. The judges actually evaluate the girls fairly and intelligently. They all know their stuff. I have upmost trust in the judges and that they will ultimately choose the girl who deserves to win because she has excelled throughout the entire competition, has delivered week after week, is not simply a pretty commercial face, can fit in and look like a professional on the runway, and ultimately, is the best.

And now, here’s a look at the four remaining girls and a few of my favourite photographs of them. (Go Meaghan!)iii

Do you watch any reality shows like Top Model? Which are your guilty pleasures? (If you’re watching this cycle of CNTM – who do you want to win? I’m curious.)

  1. One of the reasons I stopped watching America’s Next Top Model was out of fiery hatred for Tyra Banks. I cannot stand the woman. She was tolerable for a little while, but good lord, she needed to be gone 10 seasons ago. No one needs her brag-ish, over-to-top, holier-than-though antics. I’m rejoicing in CNTM’s lack of the Tyrant. (»)
  2. With ANTM, I feel like – and I’m sure others will agree with me – winning the competition actually hurts the model more than it helps them. Being America’s Next Top Model seems laughable and like a joke to actual industry standards and professionals. (»)
  3. I never said I couldn’t display favouritism. :P (»)

I’m an ANTM addict, but around Cycle 4, the show just went downhill, and by Cycle 7, it was nothing but reality trash. My favorite ANTM cycle is Cycle 1, YAY Adrianne and Elyse!!

I’ll have to look into CNTM. I love love love Jay Manuel, and it’ll be good to watch a NTM show without Tyrant. :D

It’s such a joke now, isn’t it? I’m even at the point where I can’t even watch it just to laugh because it just drives me insane. It’s not even good trash tv. XD
I love Jay as the host so much. He’s awesome. :D

How I wish I could watch these shows! Aaah stupid Italy. I think an INTM does exist, actually, but it’s on pay-tv. Meh.

Aw, that sucks. Paying for special television channels is such crap. :( (A lot of the Top Model shows can be downloaded online though. *coughcough*)

I think we had Australia’s Next Top Model on for the first time (free to air) last year… but after hearing so much about Tyra on ANTM I gave it a miss… whoops. I guess I’d have to pay for cable to see these now.

Are you a Project Runway fan? I’m tempted to get the first series on DVD but not if it’s all reality crap and no actual creative content…

Tyra is definitely the down fall of ANTM. It’s kind of unfortunate, really. But if you get a chance, you should at least give Australia’s NTM a chance. :) I haven’t seen it, but I’ve watched the British and Canadian editions, and they’re both pretty good… so here’s hoping! :D

For some reason, I could never get into Project Runway. I’m not sure why because it seems like something that would appeal to me but for some reason or another, it never sparked for me.
