Polaroid photos are one of those things that has been done over and over and over and over again, beaten over the head until the cows come home, and taken by everyone, their mom, and their neighbour’s parakeet. Yes. Really. That much. Anyone can ‘take’ a Polaroid image – and I say ‘take’ with quotations because with technology like Photoshop, you see a lot of people emulating the retro Polaroid quality on regular digital photos – but not just anyone can really capture an image with the character and nostalgia deserved.
Jen Gotch of My Polaroid Blog has just the magical touch that infuses her photographs with the beauty, light-heartedness, and spontaneity associated with the Polaroid. Her images have a quirky and vibrant sense of colour, a skillful approach to composition, and an overall breath-taking and other-worldly quality to them. I love how she so artistically captures all the fleeting moments that are so often unseen and quickly passed by.

There’s something so alluring about black and white. It’s crisp and modern, bold and graphic, sophisticated and classic, playful and energetic. It reinvents itself with every use and never goes out of style. There’s nothing I love more than that: timelessness. That’s what separates trend from thoughtful design. If you’re not going to love something in 6 months’ time, why bother? Because design isn’t only about keeping up with the Joneses. It’s also about creating something functional and livable that transcends frivolity while still staying true to your own creative vision.
This shoot is from the May issue of LivingEtc., so I’m a wee bit behind the times in posting this, but I’m still as much in love with it as I was the moment I turned the pages for the first time. Like I said: timelessness.

Playing… Klondike on my iPod. But really, who are they kidding – just call the thing by it’s proper name: solitaire! It’s terribly addictive. Almost worst than ice cream!

In case it hasn’t been established by my numerous Alice in Wonderland themed posts, I’m a bit of a fanatic. Imagine my delight, then, at discovering a beautiful set of photographs based around my favourite book. And they’re shot underwater! That ups the cool-factor by a hundred and ten percent! And let me just say, the results are incredible. Not only do they capture the essence of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, but in and of themselves they evoke the beauty and innocence of childhood. Click on to see photographer Elena Kalis’ inspiring interpretation of Alice in her series Alice in WaterLand.

Welcome to my very first Monthly Mixtape post! :D Music is a super duper huge part of who I am and what I love, so I’m super excited about this! And I hope everyone else will enjoy the tunes as much as I enjoyed putting them together.
This month I’m dedicating my mix to summer. Carefree days, reading on the grass, sand in your toes, sunburns on your nose, fireworks, salty ocean waves, lemonade, ferris wheels, sun dresses, the smell of sunscreen… The lyrics don’t necessarily talk about summer explicitly, but the music itself evokes that cheery summery mood to me. :)
