I Heart… Karen Walker (Spring 2010 RTW)

I’d be lying if I didn’t say I haven’t been semi-religiously watching Fashion TV over the last few days. Since I’ve had the house to myself, it means reverting to old bad habits like eating microwaveable foods in large quantities, not washing the dishes until absolutely necessary, and leaving the television turned on at all times for ‘background noise’. Not that I consider Fashion TV ‘background noise’ – it’s more like a religion! – but you catch my drift. It happened to be quite the convenient time to be tuned in 24 hours a day with New York fashion week under wraps, as well. I like to think my parents strategically planned their trip to coincide with post-fashion week just for my benefit. Wouldn’t that be oh so considerate of them?

In honour of this momentous event in the fashion industry, I thought I’d dedicate this week to my five favourite collections of Spring 2010. Horray! First stop… Karen Walker!

The patterning on this dress is like one giant doodle! I love how organic and playful it is.

I think this is my favourite look from the entire collection. That ruffled dress is to die for; it has such a lovely shape and all those ruffles really draw your eye to the piece. And I love that pop of wide black and white striped fabric at the hemline.

Great pattern mixing!

Mathilde Frachon

Juliana Schurig
This dress has such a fun pattern. And I love the little pop of that doodle-y pattern at the neckline. (Yet another example of Karen Walker’s brilliant pattern mixing skill.) Plus those ruffled sleeves… yummy!

Skye Stracke

00280m
Polka dots! Polka dots! Polka dots! Like I couldn’t not fall in love with this one. It would go against my beliefs!

Anastasia Kuznetsova

Angelika Kocheva
I adore the faint yellow piping on the jacket. It’s such an unexpected and lighthearted touch to something as masculine and structured as a military jacket.

Charlotte Hoyer

Constance Jablonski
Love this neckline! The over exaggerated frills are quite breath taking, and the deep navy colour of the whole dress keeps it from being costume-y.

This collection is fairly subdued when you consider what appears on the runway as a whole. There’s a lot of pushing the boundaries with what is wearable, and ultimately, what is clothing. Though this collection is fairly low key by comparison, it’s far from boring. It uses many classic patterns and colours (wide stripes in navy and white), feminine silhouettes, fluttery sleeves and hemlines, all with a bit of a nautical vibe. I think it’s the mixing of prints that really livens up this collection making it much more quirky and fun than your every day wear. All in all, this is one of the collections that I felt meshed with my own personal style the best. Personally, I love basic neutral colours (blacks, white, greys, navys), and I love that this collection built off of that palette with an infusion of a few graphic patterns (stripes, over-size polka dots) and the bold pops of colour. The yellows are perfection. I think it really cheers up the whole look and gives it that extra bounce of high spirit.

I love that Navy is the colour right now, black is so harsh.

Can I please have Fashion TV too, this is unfair haha

Navy is totally growing on me. I never used to be a fan until a few years ago. A beautiful pea coat changed my opinion entirely. Bless that pea coat. It revolutionized my appreciation of navy as a colour.

I will always, always, always love black though. It’s one of my favourite colours. Maybe that makes me a little depressing or something, but whatevs. I like black and I’m not ashamed of it! :P

Gasp! You need Fashion TV! Or at least some version of it anyway!

Love this collection. I’d probably wear at least 3/4 of it. And that’s saying something (sometimes I like a collection, but would maybe only wear one or two pieces). I enjoy the nautical-y parts of it. I could do without some of the hats. A few are headed into Devo territory.

I hear ya. The hats are a leeeettle bit… shall we say, bucket-like? I thought maybe it was just my general dislike of hats though, but I guess I’m not alone. XD
