I Heart… Vera Wang (Spring 2010 RTW)

The third stop in this week’s New York Fashion Week marathon/extravaganza is… Vera Wang! Predictable pick? Yeah, you caught me. But I’m like a crow; it sees something glittery and it immediately dives for it. I see something black and white, and I’m all over it. (Bonus points if it’s sparkley and/or shiny. I like that too. :P) I can’t help it. My name is Krissy and I’m a black-and-white-a-holic.

There. Such a relief to have that out in the open. And now I can blissfully continue on to my happy place of black, white, and sparkleyness courtesy of the lovely Miss Vera Wang (who I also think is one of the most awesome people ever and I kind of want her to be my BFF).

Huge statement necklaces are definitely the ‘in’ thing this season, and a trend I 100% support. Just look how shiny that is! Massive, glittery, … eep, there go my crow instincts again.

What did I tell ya? The jewelry in this collection is truly astounding. I’m in awe. It really steals the show. It’s so intricate and detailed. It really has a life of its own.

It’s like she’s wearing angel wings. And a spider-web for a necklace. ‘Nuff said; I’m on board.

And here’s her arch-nemesis: the angel of darkness!

Not feeling the baggy below-the-waist action on this one (or the one above), but that spider-web-esque necklace is divine. It’s Spider-Man’s twin sister, saving New York from crimes against fashion!

Proof that it’s not all good. And that polka dots can be wrong. I can’t believe I said that. Really and truly, I cannot believe it. And you all thought I would advocate polka dots from my deathbed. To be honest, I thought so too. But I’m just not feelin’ this. At all. It’s like it hopped right in from another collection all together. Not just because I think it’s horrendous, but also because it kind of doesn’t go. Or is that just me? Everything else is so sleek and luxe with a touch of edge, and this just… well, it isn’t.

Kate Kosushkina
My Christmas list is growing. This is on it. I love the tulle; it’s almost insect-y. Insect wing like, that is. I don’t want anyone reaching for their insect repellent. Think delicate moth. Without the weird spazzy motions. Or maybe with the weird spazzy motions. That could be interesting…

This is another favourite of mine. The dress is very simple and elegant. Paired with that necklace, it pushes the boundaries and really brings out a bit of a bad girl vibe.

Detail - Shoes
And the shoes. Let’s not forget the shoes. (Since I seem to have somehow done that in my previous posts. Quite appalling, I know. You’re ashamed, I’m ashamed, it’s a big circle of shame, and I’m feelin’ and deservin’ it all.) I’m not usually one for anything that even hints at bondage, but these I’m loving.

It’s like Little Red Riding Hood gone bad. I approve.

Maybe I’ve been watching too much Supernatural, but for me, this is totally the haute couture interpretation of elements of the show. The collection is romantic and girly, but is also very moody and edgy and ominous. Like it’s straddling the line between good and evil. Whether to follow the light, or go to the dark side. Embrace its inner girly-girl, or let loose the naughty. Ask for a side of good boy while secretly coveting an entree of bad boy. Does it want brooding and tortured but misunderstood villian, or always righteous saves-the-day super hero? I could go on, but you catch my drift, non? I think this see-saw back and forth is what really makes this collection stand out to me as more than just boring old “sophisticated and classy black and white”. (Not that I have any objection to that what-so-ever. I love sophisticated and classy black and white!) But Vera Wang’s collection really tells a story and that sets it apart.

What do you think? Has she gone over to the dark side?i

  1. I think she has. And it’s flippin’ hott. Give me a little dark side any day of the week. ;) (»)

I’m not overly in love with this Vera Wang collection, its just so … baggy. Only twig women can pull them off. It’s almost a masculine-ised beauty. I would like to see them either a bit shorter or more fitted. But I’m sure the high street interpretation of these designs will do that.

I do however desperately want the shoes and the cape!

I do love your fashion blogs Krissy, you are a font of fashion knowledge!

I don’t mind the bagginess (I don’t find it that bad), but I definitely agree on the length. It could do to be just a tad shorter. On a few of the dresses, it works, but it is a little big awkward now that you’ve mentioned it and I’ve taken a closer look.
Haha, you and your capes. :P When I’m a bajillionaire, I will buy you that cape. And a Snape-like cape, too. :P

Love the jewelry and the shoes… but I’m not really a fan of the clothing except I love the drape-y wrap cardigan thing after Bat Girl and the insect/moth tulle outfit, hehe :]

You know, I sort of agree with you. Within that collection, that polka dot dress sticks out like a sore thumb and not in a good way. But…in a different collection, time and place, I sort of like it. But it would have to be the right body type with that pattern and shape– sort of like that model.

Hell, I’m 5’9″ and I still don’t think I’d want to carry that pattern and length around. The cut and length makes her legs look non-existent!

I love those huge necklaces, too. They’re fantastic. :) Vera gowns for life…but her bedding? Not so much.

My thoughts exactly. I feel like that dress got the silly putty treatment – it got streeeetched out way too much. It’s definitely not something that would be flattering on a lot of people, unfortunately.

I didn’t know Vera Wang made bedding, either! Interesting! I suppose if I ever find any, I’ll stay away though. :P

Nice! Particular faves are BatGirl’s high necklace and the angel of darkness outfit. Love a good drape too, and ANYTHING black, platinum/silver is fine with me.

*high five* As a self-proclaimed black/grey/white/silver/anything in that general colour family kind of girl: YAY! Because I’m drawn to those colours like a moth to flame. Glad I’m not alone in that love. ;D
