Happy Halloween!

Just wanted to wish everyone that celebrates a Happy Halloween! *cue spooky music*And for those that don’t, a pretty The Birds inspired photoshoot with the always stunning Sasha Pivovarova. ♥

a) Because it’s Sasha and Sasha = love.
b) Because it’s somewhat festive and horror-inspired
c) Because it’s pretttttyy!
d) Because even when frightened for her life, she looks flippin’ stylin’ with those lovely belted peacoats and dresses.
And e) Because I’m still recovering from midterm presentations at university and I really just want to hibernate for the next few months and not have to think any more. :P

I Heart… Black in Interior Design

I’d been meaning to make a post dedicated to my latest design crush – black ♥ – for a few months now, but have kept putting it off for no apparent reason. But in keeping with the Halloween spirit around here latelyi, now seemed like the ideal time to delve into the darkest shade of the colour spectrum.

In terms of interior design, I’d say black is by far the most misunderstood colour. It’s generally accepted as far too harsh for use in the home. In a world where colour associations are so closely bound to a particular shade, I can easily see why most shy away from black. After all, when considered in the strictest of contexts, black is associated with death, depression, drama, angst. It has a tendency to completely absorb colour and doesn’t reflect back any light. For those willing to shed these pre-disposed cultural connotations for black, let’s take a little adventure to the dark side. (You’re imagining Darth Vader while reading this now, aren’t you?)

  1. I don’t know where it came from. Really, I’m not usually a Halloween fanatic. I’ve just been very inspired this year. (»)
  2. Why yes, that is a washroom in Gwyneth Paltrow’s home! (»)

I Heart… Miss Dior’s Collages

Collage is a medium that’s always stayed with me over the years. It’s just one of those processes that you pick up early on – cutting out pictures from the newspaper and from catalogues and pasting them all together – and that’s very easy to get into. I think because I’m such a visual person, being bombarded with so many images at once really spoke to me. I just love the organic, free spirit behind it, and I always have.i There are no constraints, no rules to follows. It’s just pure artistic expression spilling out onto the page/canvas/screen/whatever have you. It’s primitive yet sophisticated and complex. There’s no need for order, symmetry, balance, form… you simply let it all run wild, shapeless, assymetrical, exploding off the page in whatever direction pleases you. That’s half the fun. It’s practically required of it!

That’s not to say fussing and careful consideration of elements and their position, colours, sizes, etc., are completely irrelevant. All I’m saying is allow yourself to be free and completely unrestrained by boundaries and something uniquely beautiful will be born. I think this is quite true of Miss Dior’s collage work. Her pieces are so elaborate and crammed pack with fashion-image-y goodness, it’s hard to know where to look first. There’s so much to take in, but everything is so strategically pieced together that even with bits and pieces coming at you from all angles, her work stays cohesive.

  1. And actually, even now, you’ll see a lot of influence and reference to collage in the majority of my forays into graphic and web design. (»)

Picspam… The Occult

“It didn’t matter in the end how old they had been, or that they were girls, but only that we had loved them, and that they hadn’t heard us calling, still do not hear us, up here in the tree house with our thinning hair and soft bellies, calling them out of those rooms where they went to be alone for all time, alone in suicide, which is deeper than death, and where we will never find the pieces to put them back together.”

Monthly Mixtape… ‘Ode to a Construction Document’

I suppose there isn’t really a theme to this month’s mixtape at all. It’s a great big smattering of things that really don’t fit all that well together. There’s classical, bubblegum pop, ambient, alternative, oldies, electronica,… basically, it’s randomosity. A little of this, a little of that with nothing in common other this being a collection of songs I’ve been listening to on repeat for the past month or so.

The name? Well, I have a folder in my iTunes that contains a mix for each month of the year with the songs I listened to the most during that particular month. I usually name the mixes after something that happened to me that month. For example, the mix for the month I went away to university for the first time is titled “Pulling Away From The Curb At Last”. And the title of the mix for a month filled with lots of friend drama was called “Raindrops Keep Falling From My Eyes”i. In a nut shell, they’re just silly titles that make me laugh. This month’s mixii was named “Ode to a Construction Document” because a lot of the material I’m learning at university right now is about construction documents. And that’s pretty much the jist of it. Onward to the mix!
