I ♥ Bright Star
I’m so in love with Bright Star. So in love that I feel light-headed and get a rush of happiness just thinking about it. So in love that it’s been the only thing on my mind since I watched this movie Friday afternoon. So in love that I can’t even form coherent sentences. No matter how I try, I just can’t get it out of my head. Though, in all honesty, I haven’t made much of an effort on that front. I quite enjoy having my mind flooded with images of wildflowers, calligraphy, butterflies, and mid-18th century British cottages, and delighting in thoughts of undying love and poetry.
You don’t have to like John Keats, or poetry, or even love stories to enjoy this movie. (I’m not really a huge romance movie – or book, for that matter – fan, so if that’s what’s making you weary of this movie … trust me, it’s so much more than that.) If for nothing else, watch this movie for the sheer beauty of it and for the privilege of taking in something so visually stunning. The cinematography is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It’s truly inspired and absolutely breath-taking. Don’t believe me? Allow the images to do the talking…i
If ever the phrase “feast for the eyes” was to be properly defined, alongside its definition would be a few small words: “e.g., Bright Star (2009)“. Honestly, this collection of screen caps does not do the film justice. You really have to experience the motion and fluidity of it all on screen to know what I’m talking about.
Above is a clip of Fanny (played by Abbie Cornish) receiving a letter from John Keats (Ben Whishaw). It’s scenes like this that really strike something deep within the soul. The way that everything floats so delicately across the screen - the sets, the music, the light – and the liquid poetry of Keats’ words. I haven’t had another film, book, painting… anything, touch me in such a profound way as Bright Star has. Trying to relay my deep connection to it is almost fruitless. Any words I could possibly piece together could never describe my overwhelming love and how I’m so drawn to this movie. If the beauty of poetry was to transform into images, Bright Star would form its dictionary.
P.S. If anyone who’s seen this wants to gush ad-nauseum with me, seriously, hit me up: shimmerlikegold@gmail.com. I enjoy a good gush fest. ii

- Most of the following pictures are screen caps from the trailer, but there are a few odd captures from throughout the movie as well. I don’t think there’s anything that would spoil the plot, but if you’re apprehensive, I suggest you skip to the end of this post just be on the safe side. (»)
- Or if you just want to e-mail me for the fun of e-mail, that’s cool, too. ;D (»)
