I ♥ Bright Star

I’m so in love with Bright Star. So in love that I feel light-headed and get a rush of happiness just thinking about it. So in love that it’s been the only thing on my mind since I watched this movie Friday afternoon. So in love that I can’t even form coherent sentences. No matter how I try, I just can’t get it out of my head. Though, in all honesty, I haven’t made much of an effort on that front. I quite enjoy having my mind flooded with images of wildflowers, calligraphy, butterflies, and mid-18th century British cottages, and delighting in thoughts of undying love and poetry.

You don’t have to like John Keats, or poetry, or even love stories to enjoy this movie. (I’m not really a huge romance movie – or book, for that matter – fan, so if that’s what’s making you weary of this movie … trust me, it’s so much more than that.) If for nothing else, watch this movie for the sheer beauty of it and for the privilege of taking in something so visually stunning. The cinematography is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It’s truly inspired and absolutely breath-taking. Don’t believe me? Allow the images to do the talking…i

If ever the phrase “feast for the eyes” was to be properly defined, alongside its definition would be a few small words: “e.g., Bright Star (2009)“. Honestly, this collection of screen caps does not do the film justice. You really have to experience the motion and fluidity of it all on screen to know what I’m talking about.

Above is a clip of Fanny (played by Abbie Cornish) receiving a letter from John Keats (Ben Whishaw). It’s scenes like this that really strike something deep within the soul. The way that everything floats so delicately across the screen -  the sets, the music, the light – and the liquid poetry of Keats’ words. I haven’t had another film, book, painting… anything, touch me in such a profound way as Bright Star has. Trying to relay my deep connection to it is almost fruitless. Any words I could possibly piece together could never describe my overwhelming love and how I’m so drawn to this movie. If the beauty of poetry was to transform into images, Bright Star would form its dictionary.

John Keates

  1. Most of the following pictures are screen caps from the trailer, but there are a few odd captures from throughout the movie as well. I don’t think there’s anything that would spoil the plot, but if you’re apprehensive, I suggest you skip to the end of this post just be on the safe side. (»)
  2. Or if you just want to e-mail me for the fun of e-mail, that’s cool, too. ;D (»)

Awww it looks amazing!. I have to look it up somewhere… I am a sucker for period dramas and Austen(ish) revisions, so I definitely have to give it a go. :D

I definitely have to find this somewhere so I can watch it… I saw the trailer a while ago and it looked really good but my desire to see it is heightened by your gushing! :) It really does look gorgeous.

I will definitely watch it as soon as I can. I wanted to watch it when I saw the advertisement for it but no one wanted to see it with me and I really don’t like watching movies at the theatres by myself. I will gladly email you as soon as I watch it. I love these kinds of movies (romance is my thing bigtime :))

I still haven’t seen this movie. It looks SO good. So beautiful. I’m trying to see if it’s playing nearby, but it looks like I may have to wait until it’s released on DVD…

You always find the best things, Krissy.

It’s actually out on DVD tomorrow, so you’re in luck! :D

I actually ran into that problem – it wasn’t playing anywhere near me – so I splurged and ordered the DVD on Amazon… and surprise, surprise, it came 5 days early. Which was odd, but no complaints on my end! haha. I’ve never bought a movie without having seen it before, but it was so worth it! I’ll watch this again and again and again. ♥

I remember seeing the trailer for it way back when and thinking it looked really good. However, I’m not the greatest fan of Abbie Cornish (I can’t get my head around those rumors she split up Ryan and Reese! *sob*) so I’m a little hesitant about whether or not I’ll see the movie. :P

You simply must get past said rumour, because it’s a fantastic movie! :D

(I love Abbie Cornish… rumour or not. :P Though I hadn’t heard that until you mentioned it. I don’t really follow celebrity news.)

Okay, so I see now that you bought the dvd. I was just thinking about buying it–only wondered if I would want to watch it repeatedly since I know it has a sad ending (that’s reality, of course–something from which I don’t especially mind escaping!). I imagine I’ll go ahead and buy it, though. Thanks again for your thoughts on it.

I’m so glad I bought the DVD. I was hesitant at first, but this movie came highly recommended to me by someone who’s opinion on movies I really trust, so I’m glad I went for it. I’ll definitely watch it over and over again.
