Just A Minute… In January 2010

Alice Books

Enjoying… a ridiculously long winter break.i It’s been so wonderful though. I’ve had lots of time to relax, watch movies, read, loaf around, and be generally quite lazy.

Reading… 3 whole books this month, and I’m working on the 4th! Before now, I hadn’t read a book since August. (Appaling, I know.) I devoured The Kalevala, The Alchemist, and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. I’m currently reading The Piano Teacher.

Listening… to Debussy’s Cloches à travers les feuilles. I’m enthralled by this piece of music. I’m going to start learning it on piano.

Exercising… or trying to. I got terribly lax on my exercise regime in December, and I’m trying to work up my endurance again. As a Twitter friend so cleverly put it: “I’m not going to call it working out. I’m going to call it horror movie training. You never know when you’ll need to run.” My new motivation.

Compiling… many-a-mixtape. One of my favourite pass-times is creating playlists in iTunes. I have a bajillion. I’ve made quite a few more than normal this month. Suffice to say, I’m very excited for February’s Mixology.

Listening… and rather obsessively I might add, to Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson’s album The Break Up. It’s so fantastic. I’m addicted to the song I Am The Cosmos. No lie, I listen to it every day. And have for a good month.

Preparing… for back to school. Yes, my winter break is quickly coming to an end. It’s back to studying for me on Monday.

Shopping… lots and lots and lots. Probably too much. But I can’t help myself. It’s that time of year: post holiday sales time. I don’t spend a lot throughout the year, so I let myself go a little overboard every January as a treat to myself.

Anticipating… the final season of Lost! It’s all I could think about these last few weeks, and I can’t wait! Only a few days away now.

Stomping… around in my two new pairs of boots! Two months into the snowy season, and I finally have boots. It was kind of pathetic before. But I’m finally armed with two super stylish and practical pairs. Fear me, winter!

Blogging… up a regular-sized storm! Yes, I initially planned to do NaBloPoMo this month, but it became too stressful, too much like school. So I stuck to my regular posting ’schedule’. A schedule I refer to as blogging whenever I feel like it. :P I’d much rather post things when I’m inspired to do so, than be forced to each day.

  1. Really. I’ve had almost 6 weeks off. I’ve never heard of such a long break before. (»)

Teehee! One of yours is virtually the same as one of mine… I’ll give you three guesses, although you’ll probably need just one ;D

I don’t even need one guess to know which one it is. :P (SO. EXCITED.)

Scarlett Johannson and Pete Yorn’s Break Up album is deliciously good… so I totally get why you’ve listened to it non-stop. I did too when I first listened to it. Ooh and eee! I just started watching Lost again so I’m excited for the final season now, too.

I’ve defenitely been enjoying your blogging! I’m currently reading a book called “Princess of the Midnight Ball,” and it is sooooooo good! It’s really dark and haunting.

Aw, well thank you, Luinae! :D I looked up Princess of the Midnight Ball (the name sounded familiar, and then I remembered that it was written by an author I studied in my fairy tales course a few years ago), and it sounds interesting! I love fairy tales retold, so I’ll have to check it out!

I scoff at you preparing to go back to school. I’ve been slaving away for three weeks already :P

I wish I could trade with you then! As much as I like being on break, it’s so terribly long that I don’t really know what to do with myself. I wish I was already 3 weeks into the semester!

When I learned about Debussy in my Intro to Music class and started listening to his music, I fell in love completely.

I adore Debussy! His music is like a dream. He’s one of my favourite composers.

Yea!! I learned of his “Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune” and Nocturnes.

Ooh, neat! What kind of course did you take? :) (I studied music for my bachelor’s degree.)

Lady » January 30th, 2010

I took Intro to music western history for a pre-requisite. But I loved it

I’m really excited about the last season of Lost! It will be kind of sad when it’s all over, but I also can’t wait to see what’s going to happen!

Also, I didn’t know Scarlett Johansson was a singer, too!

Those are my exact sentiments about Lost: excited to know what happens, but also sad knowing that in a few months, it’ll all be over. Though I suppose it will always live on in DVD land. I’m actually really excited to marathon the entire series! I’m sure we’ll know so many new things that will completely change the way we watch seasons 1-5 after the series finale.

Hello my new exercise buddy! Hehe, I am trying to get into shape and it is hard. No one told me it would be this hard. What kind of training do you do? Do you bother going to the gym? (I don’t haha)

Good evening, new exercise buddy! ;D

I know what you mean. I’ve started to get a bit frustrated with exercising. All these ads and such on television give you a completely distorted sense of it, and it makes it frustrating when you expect results but aren’t getting them. *shakes fist at them*

I don’t do any super duper intense training or anything, but I’m trying to get into running. I started to work on it a bit in September but got really slack in December, so I’m kind of starting from scratch again. I want to be able to run a 10-k marathon. That’s my ultimate goal. Though getting there is not going well. I can only do a few minutes of running, and then I have to walk a bit. :(

I don’t go to the gym (it terrifies me!), but my mom is an uber health fiend, so she has a treadmill in the basement which I’ve been using. I’m hoping by the time I move out, I’ll be comfortable enough and conditioned enough that I’ll be able to run out on the sidewalk (since I won’t have the luxury of a treadmill then).

Your blog is so pretty :)
Is The Alchemist good? I’ve read others book written by Paulo Coelho and they were ok.

Krissy » January 31st, 2010

Thank you. :D

It is! I quite liked it. It’s not my favourite book in the world, per se, but I think it’s one of those books that are worth reading and that everyone should read. Which other books by Paulo Coelho have you read? Veronika Decides to Die is one of my all-time favourite books, not just by him, but of all the books I’ve ever read. :D

I read The Diary of a Magus, By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept and Brida which was the only one worth reading in my opinion. I’ve watched Veronika Decides to Die on film and thought it was quite sad for most of the time. Maybe I’m just getting too used to chick lit.

Can I ask you what plugin do you use to enable replies to comments?

I’m not super familiar with his stuff – I’ve only read The Alchemist and Veronika Decides to Die – so I might check out the last one you mentioned. The two I read were so vastly different, I almost wouldn’t believe they were written by the same author. So I’m not really sure how I feel about him as an author just yet since I can’t quite pin down his ’style’ yet.

But I ADORE Veronika Decides to Die. I also generally really love those kinds of books though – saddish and kind of depressing. I’m not sure why, but I just find them quite fascinating. (I thought they did a really great job on the Veronika film too. I really liked it.)

The plugin I use is Wordpress Thread Comment: http://blog.2i2j.com/plugins/wordpress-thread-comment :)

I couldn’t help but comment on this even if I’m supposed to comment on your latest post! Hehe. Just so happened I recognized the picture you used as the one I posted in my Tumblr ages ago (which you also “liked”). LOL Yay for using that picture! :D

I feel jealous of you right now for being able to find the time to read a lot of books. I’m swamped at the moment with exams and schoolwork and I’m not yet even halfway done with Lolita and the only book I’ve finished reading for the year was The Wizard of Oz!

And I’m on the same boat with exercising. I really need to do it. I’ve tried jogging last Wednesday and I want to continue doing it every week. I also can’t wait for the mixtape so I can add more to my Krissy’s Recommendations folder.

Lastly, I wish you good luck with school, sidekick! You’ll do great! :D
