I ♥ A Collection A Day

I stumbled upon A Collection A Day, 2010 around the beginning of this year when the web was flooded when many-a new yearly projects. And while most were gearing up for their participation in Project 365 or Grace in Small Things among many other challenges, illustrator Lisa Congdon planned to undergo a slightly different task in 2010. She created a blog, A Collection A Day, in which she plans to post a photograph of one of her numerous collections each day for the entire year!i About this undertaking, she explains, “I am embarking on this project because I love my collections, and I want to document [...]  and share them with whoever might be interested in looking at them.” And interested, I am!

And because it would be terribly wrong of me to post about an illustrator without showcasing some of her work, here’s a small selection of some of my favourite drawings Lisa has done (all found via her portfolio website):

Beautiful, n’est pas? I’ve always loved her illustrations. They’re so vibrant! And I love how she playfully intersperses traditional art techniques and stereotypes with bright and geometric bursts of colour.

But back to her Collection A Day project. Since the beginning of January, I’ve been looking forward to her posts each day. As a full-fledged pack rat myself, it fills me with great pleasure to see someone else’s beloved collections showcased so artfully, and displayed for others to love and appreciate too. I know I’ve personally been asked on numerous occasions why I go to the “hassle” (their word, not mine) of collecting little bits and pieces of things and carefully arranging, organizing, storing and/or displaying them. For me, it’s the sentimental value these items hold that make me want to cling to them forever. I want to be able to remember every little detail about the wonderful things I’ve seen and experienced. It’s the memories I cling to. And these items I’ve accumulated, they become those cherished memories that I just cannot bear to throw away. That’s what I love so much about A Collection A Day. It’s a small peek into a handful of memories and small moments as experienced through Lisa’s eyes and that she’s willing to share with anyone who ventures into her little space on the web.

Out of pure nosiness – because I’m nothing if not terribly intrusive – I’m curious what others collect. Putting aside all the personal mementos I save (like movie stubs, letters, cards, notes, origami, etc.), I also collect socks, notebooks/journals, colourful pencils, pins, and stuffed bunny rabbits. I’ve also just started collecting tea cups and snow globes. What about you?

ETA: I had to add a link to today’s collection because it’s adorable: Day 35: A Collection of Plastic Charms.

I tend to keep all sorts of stuff I like, but I don’t follow a theme. I have boxes filled with random things: concert tickets, notes, letters, tiny toys, earrings that lost their match, photographs… The only thing I do collect are movie stubs, I’ve been doing that for years :D

Earrings without matches! That’s such a good idea. I never thought of that. Then one day you could end up with two mismatched earrings that go well together and they could be worn again. :D

I collect cartoon notebooks/journals/pads, post-its, recently I’ve started collecting books to make sure I read them all, and in a weird way, I collect coins. Coins I find on the streets and stuff, I put them all in one place, and don’t spend them. I think its cool for some reason.

I used to collect coins, too. They used to make these fancy quarters here that would change pictures each month, and I was obsessed with collecting them all. I still have them somewhere probably.

Some of the things I collect: Japanese kokeshi dolls, teapots, teacups and mugs, Persephone books, lotus-themed items, Bonne Maman jam jars, and incense burners. I’m sure I’m forgetting some other things. I just blogged about Japanese match boxes that almost became a collection…

I really like collections of things. It appeals to the organizer in me: I want to collect like things together. And these are so much fun. Oh no, I fear this site may be a new addiction.

Oh, how cool! Collections are so fun to look at. I collect tickets (movies, plays, concerts, etc.) and DVDs… but there is so much more that I would love to collect.

Those are all lovely even the rolls of string. Some of those pine cones look like roses! Beauty is definitely found in the strangest places.

I collect owls and miniature things when I can. I also like to keep little pretty pictures from old calendars. Sure the year is gone but why throw away the pretty pictures?

I used to save all my calendar pictures for that same reason! The pictures are still pretty even after the year ends. :D Most I’ve gotten rid of now, but I know I still have a handful of them floating around somewhere.

Oh, books for sure count! Where would we be without our beloved books to love and cherish? :D

Card decks are an interesting thing to collect! It’s like collecting lots of little pieces of art. :D I’ve always found card designs most fascinating. These are some of my favourites: http://www.itwasaloveaffair.com/v2/#37 So awesome!

Manda » 5 February 2010

She seems to collect a LOT of things :P Funny, because I’m at a point in my life where I’m trying to de-clutter and get rid of absolutely anything unnecessary. When you move around as often as I do, it all just becomes junk you haul around for too long in the end. (Clearly, I’m not very sentimental about my stuff :P)

Oh no, I 100% get that since I’ve moved a good 6 times in the last 5 years. (Oh, the joys of moving… so much fun. XD) So I’ve started to pitch some of my things over the course of each move. But there are some things I could just never get rid of. Fortunately, I have my parents house to store those sorts of sentimental items. :)

It took me a second to realize this was all the same person!
I especially like some of her vintage items, and the old photographs. And the miniature owls are adorable! I can just imagine what her house might look like, if she has everything up on display or on shelves somewhere.

I collect coins, postcards, keychains, magnets, shotglasses, and snowglobes from places that I’ve travelled…I used to collect stamps as well, but I haven’t gotten any new ones in years. I also collect concert tickets and pamphlets from events I’ve been to…And I’ve also started recently collecting autographs that I’ve gotten either through the mail or off of eBay.

Marie! Hi! Long time no see. :D I hope everything’s well for you? :D

Oh, keychains! I think I forgot to mention that in my post. I used to be a rabid keychain collector. Any time I went somewhere, or someone I knew went somewhere, I made sure I got a keychain. I’ve since stopped. Not sure why though, as I had quite the collection. I still have them all packed away some where.

Is it worrying that my first thought when reading this blog was about where the hell she stores all this stuff? I’d be a collector if I had my own place/the room for it.

Although, I tend to fuss over something intensely then let go, so collecting for me may be a bit pointless. And like Manda I’ve moved a hell of a lot in the last few years, and moving a shit load of stuff is always a pain XD Saying that, I have a load of books, that’s collecting, right?
