Mixology… Stargazer, Stargazer, Comets’ Glittering Tails In Your Eyes

“A philosopher once asked, ‘Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human? Pointless, really… Do the stars gaze back?’ Now that’s a question.”

This month’s mix was inspired by the movie from which the above quotation comes: Stardust.i  Every time I watch it, that quotation always strikes a chord with me. Oddly enough, this time that chord literally resonated with me… and so I made a mix about stargazing. Not every song is specifically about looking at the stars, per se, but they were selected because they evoke that sort of dreamy night sky mood.

Stargazer, Stargazer, Comets’ Glittering Tails In Your Eyes
Light In Your Hands

01. Heather Woods Broderick – Left
02. Fiona Apple – Across the Universe
03. Aphex Twin – Film

Nabula

04. Télépopmusik – Don’t Look Back
05. Enya РLothlϟrien
06. Stars – Going, Going Gone

Night Sky Constellations

07. Nouvelle Vague – The Killing Moon
08. Flunk – Personal Stereo
09. The Album Leaf – Gust Of…

Outer Space

10. Goldfrapp – Utopia
11. Björk – Pneumonia
12. Feist – The Water

Purple Sky

13. Hooverphonic – Battersea
14. The Honey Trees – Wake the Earth
15. Portishead – Mysterons

Constellation Globe

16. Fever Ray – Dry and Dusty
17. Pornopop – Nicotine and the Backward Lounge
18. Lady & Bird – Run in the Morning Sun
19. Alpha – Stargazing

Starry Trees

The entire mix can be found on last.fm, here.

I both love and fear the night star. I find it terribly fascinating to think that in the grand scheme of it all, we’ve all but a teeny, tiny dot of a galaxy amongst the hundreds; that in itself is hard to wrap your head around. There’s something about staring into endless nothingness that makes you begin to wonder and question everything around you. I try not to think about it too long or my brain starts to hurt as I start pondering on how exactly we all exist in time and space.

  1. which I enjoyed watching yesterday during my “I Love Me Day” extravaganza. (»)

I love the movie Stardust. I think it’s incredibly underrated and I wish more people would watch it. It’s got the perfect mix of action, romance, and fantasy and is very witty and endearing. I also really like that you made a star mix. I’ll def listen to a few of those on youtube

To be honest, I wasn’t that impressed with it on the first watch; I find the more I watch it, the better it gets. In that regard, I hope that if others feel the same way about it, that they don’t give up after the first viewing, because it gets so much better after mutliple watches. :)

Well this is weird! (click my name!)
Anyway, I love so many of these songs/artists! And I freaking love Stardust. I actually rented it last week with The Village because I was tired of watching it on the internet, but I ended up loving The Village so much that I watched it 5 times and so I had no time to watch Stardust. Hahaha.

Hey! Stardust quoting buddies! haha We had a moment of shared brains there it seems. :D

I remember seeing a copy of Stardust for 10$ in a store once and thinking, “Nah, I’ll never watch that movie again” and I didn’t buy it. Oh, how I regret that now! Because I’ve seen it so many times since then.

I think you might like Stardust. :) Mind you, I’m not really sure what movies you like, but based on you mentioning Legend of the Seeker before, and it being fantasy… I’m making the leap and saying you might like Stardust. too. ;)

This mix reminds me of the astronomy class I took senior year of high school. We had a really extensive unit on stars and we almost went stargazing!

Ah, man that would have been awesome! They started running an astronomy class the year after I graduated from high school – I was so bummed because I would have taken it in an instant!

I love stargazing!! Its one of my all time favorite past times! Funny story on my second date with my now boyfriend I lay down in the middle of the road and just stared at the stars, he thought I was a little strange but I couldn’t help it the sky was just so beautiful that night!

Oh Krissy, it’s posts like this that remind me how much we have in common. I love the night sky. It makes me feel so tiny and so significant at the same time. There’s so much beauty in this universe and we’re part of it. We didn’t have to be here, but we are. We’re that special.
