I ♥ Sarah Richardson

Since I just started back to university again, I’ve started thinking on where I find my inspiration, what inspires me, and ultimately, what my personal voice is as a designer. To really answer that question, I had to go to the root of my love of interior design: designer Sarah Richardson. Without even a second thought, she is my number 1 inspiration. In a way, she’s my design idol and unknowingly, she was one of my main inspirations for pursuing design as a career for myself.

Above is one of my all-time favourite rooms. And not just of hers. In general. It’s so gorgeous. All that patterning… divine.

She always has such impeccable washrooms as well. They’re so expensive looking. And I love that there’s always a hint of something glittery to reflect the light around the room and make it look that much more glamourous.

Sarah is a very well known designer in Toronto, Canada who not only specializes in residential design, but has done a decent amount of commercial work and furniture design as well. Seeing someone so well-rounded, successful, and ambitious as a designer really speaks to me as someone who is so passionate about design. Her radical success really drives me to study harder to strive to achieve my own goals.

Sarah has a very classic and timeless approach to design. Everything she puts together helps to paint a larger picture of elegance and charm. I love how she incorporates high end pieces, her own furniture designs, and re-used items into her spaces to create something that looks lush and expensive without seeming fussy or over the top; every room is still accessible and grounded. Her slightly eclectic eye for artful and unique items as well as her love of the freshness and vibrancy of white are her signature. And every room is topped off with a touch of sparkle. The universal purity and serenity of white combined with a fine eye for intricate detail are key aspects of the Sarah Richardson aesthetic.

While there are many, many designers whose work I love and admire – Kelly Hoppen, Abigail Ahern, Samantha Pynn, and Jonathan Alder, to name a few – Sarah is about the only one whose work blows me away time and time again. Often times I find I’m drawn to aspects of certain designers’ styles, but with Sarah’s, I’m mesmerized by every little detail. She is definitely someone that, as a designer, I really aspire to be like, and I can only dream of one day being even half as talented as her.

P.S. For the interested, I wrote another entry on Sarah last year: I ♥ Sarah’s Cottage

Urgh! The kitchens. I always go to the kitchens first. I need to look away. Pretend like I didn’t see them and recognize their awesomeness.
Everything else is fantastic too.
If I were a practicing Catholic, I would give up looking at photos of kitchens for Lent.

It’s a good thing I didn’t go overboard with kitchens then! But if you’re curious and your kitchen love needs feeding, check out the link to Design Inc. (her design company) as it has lots of yummy kitchens!

Myself, bedrooms are my vice. Excuse me while I wipe the drool from my chin!

They’re so fun, aren’t they? I love designers that don’t take themselves too seriously and are willing to have lots of fun with kids’ rooms. Like that flamingo and beach umbrella wallpaper in the bunk bed room – so cute!

Oh man, you should have seen how many pictures I started out with. I was SO hard to wittle them down to even this many! (Which is still quite a lot. I tried to stay around 20 otherwise I thought it might be a bit excessive :P)

From what I’ve gathered, out side of Canada, she’s not very well known. Which is a shame really as she’s very talented.

These are all pristinely beautiful but my favorite is the one with several shades of green. Looks fresh and like it smells like spring. :D

I’m far from a design expert, and I usually prefer minimalistic stuff. But I’m blown away by Sarah’s work! In my opinion, patterns are something that is very hard to master as it can become repetitive and even tacky when overused. She is simply a master in that, and I would love to live in this post. :D

Horray! We shall live in this post together! :D

And I totally agree, re: pattern. I think it can be super duper overwhelming when done wrong, or people get too matchy-matchy with it (and I HATE that)… I don’t know how she does it, but she makes everything look like it was meant to be together and was separated at birth or something!

Her style has a really pretty aesthetic. I love how each room is different but there still seems to be a sense of “her,” if that makes sense. Although I feel like if I lived in one of her rooms I’d never be able to keep it looking as nice as it does in the photos :P

It definitely makes sense. :) All of her rooms are very distinctly “Sarah Richardson”.

Yes, the entryway! Someone else who appreciates that picture! *high five* I thought people might think I was odd for including it (and too pictures of it), but it’s so lovely! I want my entryway to look exactly like that someday.

I love the mix of modern, 60s/70s ish and older design. It makes for a really interesting texture.

I don’t really know of any (good) interior designers, but I like to follow interior design blogs because pretty houses make me happy.
