Once Upon A Time… The Alchemist

Gemstone

“It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.”i

To be entirely honest, this post has been a loooong time coming. I keep looking back over it and can’t quite decide whether or not it’s time to let it go out into the world.

Beside the point though. I’ve been pondering on a fun little project to do here at the blog for a little while, but just couldn’t quite find the right way to go about it until now. My plan is to do a special series as part of my Picspam posts dedicated to images inspired by books, movies, fairy tales, whatever have you. Like a visual translation of something non-visual. If that makes sense. In an attempt at being adorable and because I’m a fairy tales fiend, I’m titling this little series “Once Upon A Time”.

For the first part of this series, I’d like to start with the book The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo. I read this book about two months ago now, and it’s really stuck with me ever since. I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s one of my favourite books of all time, but it’s one of those books that I feel is one that everyone should read at some point in their lives. It’s a very spiritual read, and I know for me personally, it made me re-think a lot about how I go about living my daily life in pursuit of my dreams. I won’t go further into detail so as not to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read it, so on with the images! I’m hoping they serve to be more indicative of the general feel for the novel, than to retell it ‘word-for-word’, if you will. Some are literal, while others are based on certain images that came into my mind while reading.

“Before the boy could reply, a butterfly appeared and fluttered between him and the old man. He remembered something his grandfather had once told him: that butterflies were a good omen. Like crickets and like grasshoppers; like lizards and four-leafed clovers.” ii

Aw, thanks Millie! :D
And it’s definitely a book I will cherish for a long time. I’m so glad I actually bought it instead of just borrowing it from the library because I know someday I’ll want to read it again.

I haven’t quite decided yet whether it’ll just be ongoing, or if I’ll just do all my favourite books and fairy tales. The initial plan was to do my favourites, but I’m always reading and likely to accumulate new favourites, and so the cycle would continue! haha

As much as I really dislike beetles, they’re actually quite lovely bugs to look at. As long as they’re not crawling on me. ;)

I have been told by so many people to read The Alchemist – I really must get around to it soon. Once I get over this block I seem to have with reading in general…

Ugh, I know how you feel. The second I start university, I pretty much lose all desire to read in what little free time I have. And even once the semester ends, I generally find it takes me a week or so to get back in the swing of it. Very peculiar, indeed.

I read this book years ago and I’ve never forgotten it. It has a way of lingering somewhere in your subconscious and popping in when least suspected. It’s just magical like that.

It really does! Even though I only read this about 2 months ago, I find myself randomly thinking about it from time to time.

I love this book. I should re-read it because it’s been years. And I so approve of your inspired-by-books picspam idea :D

Oh, what a cool idea! I haven’t read it but I can tell that the feeling evoked by all these beautiful images could be quite similar so you’ve obviously captured how it made you feel. I think I’ll have to look into reading it someday.
