8th April 2010 in Art

I woke up this morning and vowed to spend my day solely doing homework. Quickly checked my e-mail, Twitter, and did a small scan of my feed reader while I ate breakfast. Most amazing find? The Small Stakes, a small company that designs music posters, is coming out with a book! I’ve seen a few of their posters floating around online before and loved them to pieces, so of course, the book has instantly gone on my wishlist without a second thought. After all, it’s a most glorious sounding book. Filled with 150 posters. 192 pages. Full colour. Under 25$. The perfect gift for any music and/or art lover. Myself included. Too bad my birthday isn’t until December otherwise I’d be hinting very, very strongly at my friends and family. (Or perhaps that’s a good thing. ;)

I ended up spending a good half hour scouring The Small Stakes website lusting over their posters. Unfortunately, the majority of the posters for bands I love are sold out, but then again, that’s the beauty of their book – they’ll likely all be inside. Anyhow, here’s a collection of a few of my favourites which I tried desperately to keep under twenty… we shall see how that goes.

Joanna Newsom She & Him

Josh Ritter Neko Case

Nada Surf Sun Kil Moon

Andrew Bird Andrew Bird

Nouvelle Vague Blonde Redhead

Fever Ray Explosions in the Sky

Stars Stars

Q and Not U Broken Social Scene

The New Pornographers Norah Jones

Sufjan Stevens Sufjan Stevens

The first two – Joanna Newsom and She & Him – are my two favourites. I’m not a huge fan of the band-posters-for-decor approach, but I would consider putting both of those in my space as they are just beautiful. Really, all of these posters are. They’re works of art on their own. I love the simple, graphic shapes and reduced colour palettes. They’re very crisp and elegant.

Pretty! I remember when poster used to be just a picture of a band with their instruments. How boring?! Now these artful creations are amazing. I want to start a band just so I can have a beautiful poster lol. :D

Hahah, an excellent idea! I say we form a band and then people can make awesome posters about us. :P

The Small Stakes is just a remarkable web site. I too love those posters, especially the Norah Jones one. I spoke to the owner Jason once trying to persuade him to make some Arcade Fire posters, fingers crossed that he does! So happy and excited for the book!

Definitely fingers crossed then! I have high hopes he’ll eventually make a Goldfrapp one. And when he does, I will pounce!!

Oh wow, so pretty! Loving the first five! I could definitely see framing any of their posters to put up as artwork in your home, but like you I’m not usually one for the band posters as artwork.

Those two are definitely my favourites. If they were in stock, they’d be in my ‘cart’ in a second. ;D
