Once Upon A Time… Little Red Riding Hood

Girl in Velvet Cape

“She knew worst wolves are hairy on the inside and she shivered, in spite of the scarlet shawl she pulled more closely round herself as if it could protect her, although is was as red as blood she must spill.”i

I covered Paulo Coehlo’s The Alchemist for my first installation in the Once Upon A Time… series but I, unfortunately, haven’t been doing much reading for pleasure latelyii hence this very belated second post. So inspired by having seen the movie The Brothers Grimm over the weekendiii, I thought I’d revisit one of my favourite fairy tales: Little Red Riding Hood. The Riding Hood tales in all their incarnations have always been most intriguing to me. When I was younger this was possibly because I found great amusement in the Grimms’ version where Little Red Riding Hood outsmarts the wolf, stuffs him full of stones and tosses him in a river. I thought that was pretty bad-ass. I also really wanted a red cloak to flounce around it… still kind of do… but that’s beside the point. For my first degree, I was an English minor and specialized in folk and fairy tales (my obsession!). In my studies, I happened upon the wonders of Angela Carter’s The Company of Wolves which is a modern adaptation of the Riding Hood story. I loved it like a fat kid loves cake. (You can read it here.) Dark, sinister, alluring, a wee bit naughty, and borderline disturbing and all inspired by a childhood favourite fairy tale… what’s not to love? So here’s my take on the girl in the red cloak.

“Oh, grandmother, what big ears you have!” “The better to hear you with.”
“Oh, grandmother, what big eyes you have!” “The better to see you with.”
“Oh, grandmother, what big hands you have!” “The better to grab you with.”
“But, grandmother, what a dreadful mouth you have!” “The better to eat you with.”

Alas! Who does not know that these gentle wolves,
Are of all such creatures the most dangerous!

Ooh, I nearly forgot about this series. This is stunning! So inspired. These pictures definitely illustrate Little Red Riding Hood for me. I love the one with the red shoes.

Krissy, this post is stunning. You made me remember how much I love Little Red Riding Hood, as twisted a story as it is. And I love how each photograph definitely relates to the story, even if it’s not obvious at first. I love subtly like that.

Hello! I’ve just run into your blog and all I can say is I’m am enchanted! Beautiful blog, and a lovely title. Ah! I’ve added my self to your followers, I’m so excited to keep on reading your posts. This post here is a thousand times delightful! My family used to tell me the story of The Little Red Riding Hood in Spanish. I find it a rather cozy story.
Anyhow, hope to see you around! :)
Peace and love!

I think I just like things that scare me, they intrigue me the most. I used to be terrified of wolves (especially the idea of werewolves) but now my favorite animal is the wolf and my favorite monsters are werewolves! Red riding hood, though… I wouldn’t want to mess with a girl in a red hooded cape.

I still long for a red velvet cape to wear in the winter. Thank you the Angela Carter link, have it saved for my bedtime reading tonight :D

oh, i have to say Little Red Riding Hood was almost my least favorite as a kid..i was always too scarred somehow (a little girl all alone in the woods!) ;/…i loved something more like “The Three Little Bears” or “Jack and the Beanstalk” or “Cinderella” … but such a lovely post with wonderful images..it must have been a bit difficult to find the perfect photos that related to the story! but you did great!

What a beautiful posts. All the pictures seem perfect. I need to read the Grimm version… I don’t remember her filling the wolf with stones, but that sounds like some pretty great girl power! :)

I loved fairy tales as a kid! It’s sad to say, but I’m not sure my 5 year old nephew knows of any…he’s so into Sponge Bob and Dora the Explorer! Yesterday I tried reading a Shel Silverstein book to him, but he was having none of it! Thomas the Train won out…
This fall he’ll be going to a good school, so I hope some of these tales will be part of his studies…

Hoo-hey, I was an English major in college. :) Your specialization is JUST awesome. Come to think of it, my undergraduate thesis had something to do with folklore and mythology. :)

Thanks for pointing me to the Company of Wolves. Gotta love these fairy tale/mythological re-visions! :) I remember reading a Neil Gaiman rewrite of Snow White’s stepmother (“Snow, Glass, Apples”). There’s so much literary theory to proceed from there.

And such gorgeous photos, Krissy! ;)
