Wanderlust

I have the worst imaginable case of wanderlust right now. I’ve actually had it for quite a few months, but with summer quickly coming up on us now, I can’t help but long for adventures to far away and exotic places. Perhaps because any sort of travel is so utterly, entirely, and completely unattainable to me at present, it makes me desire exploring the world even that much more than usual. Such is always the case, isn’t it? We can never quite have what we want. And for the last few months, all I’ve wanted to do is cram a suitcase full of my essentials and take off to a foreign land to roam the streets, taste new foods, meet the locals, take oodles of pictures, and explore, explore, explore! I’ve been cooped up in Canada (that seems like it should be an oxymoron considering Canada is so massive) for far too long. I need to go places, see the world! It doesn’t help any that I was supposed to go on not one, but two, trips abroad this summer which have slowly reduced to one, and now none at all. :( Suffice to say, I’m still devastated that both were canceled. I’m desperately clinging to the hope that next summer I’ll be able to fulfill this travel lust, if for no other reason than to get it out of my system! I constantly find myself daydreaming about being on the other side of the world discovering and trying new things. When I close my eyes, I see little floating globes and passports. Okay, maybe that last one was a bit of a stretch…

This is probably not going to help me in any way at all, and will probably make my case of wanderlust that much worse, but here’s a list of the top 10 places I, at this exact moment, want to visit more than anywhere else in the world.

Argentina
10. Argentina

9. Morocco

8. New Zealand

prague
7. Czech Republic
My great grandmother was Czech, and while she died when I was still very small, I was always interested from a young age in the culture. Someday I hope to spend a good amount of time there, particularly in Prague. That city fascinates me to no end.

Ireland
6. Ireland
Do you ever feel like there’s somewhere in the world that you think you would instantly love? That place for me is Ireland. This is probably ridiculously silly sounding seeing as I’ve never actually been to Ireland before, but I, for some reason or another, see it as a “home away from home”. It seems very eastern Canada-ish (my home) to me in many ways. Again though, I’ve never been so I may be completely off base in that assumption.

France
5. France
Even though I’ve already been (albeit extremely briefly – 4 days), I feel in love and am aching to go back.

4. The Netherlands

3. Australia

2. England
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to go to England. It’s one of my life-long dreams.

Greece
1. Greece
Greece. Drool. My number one destination of choice. If I could go there tomorrow, I would!

And of course, honourable mentions to Italy and Germany. I didn’t list them as I’ve briefly visited both 6 years ago (wow, it’s been 6 years since I’ve been on a vacation/trip), though I’m still dying to go back to both as I didn’t get nearly enough time in either!

Out of curiosity, where you have guys travelled to before, and where would you love to go if you had a plane ticket to anywhere in the world?

And as always, click photos for sources.

My goodness! What a lovely post, I live in Canada too and I’m dying to travel far away from it as soon as I graduate highschool next year. You covert most of the places I want to go see here in this post, I’m most eager to see Morocco, it would be devine. Canada’s culture has hardly any passion or spice to it. I can’t travel sometime. I bid you lots of luck and happiness and may you soon be able to travel to all these majestic places!

Ah wanderlust, that summer curse! I know what you mean, though. Just yesterday I was discussing with my mom that I can’t decide which country I’d want to go to if I study abroad. Korea, New Zealand, France? Or any other country, for that matter. I never dreamed I’d go to Thailand this summer, but I’m so grateful I did. So bustling, so colorful!

But if I was handed a plane ticket to anywhere NOW… I’d probably say New Zealand. :)

Wow, 6 years since you last went on a vacation? Here I was going crazy for not having been on a vacation last year XD I’m very happy to go to Sweden this August. Scandinavia has always had this “I just know I’ll love it there” thing for me… Since I live in Europe, I suppose it’s much easier for me to travel to lots of countries than say, someone living in Canada. I live in the Netherlands, but that you knew. I’ve traveled to Belgium, France, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, England, Scotland and Ireland. I’ve also been to Dubai which is so far the only trip outside Europe I’ve been on. I’m in love with the UK and Ireland. I would still like to see Portugal, Greece, Italy, Canada, Kenya, Australia, New Zealand and then some more but those are the ones I’d most like to visit. Somehow Asia never had any sort of pull on me, although I might still visit some Asian countries some time as well. I wouldn’t mind going back to any of the countries I’ve visited so far either…
If I had a plane ticket to anywhere in the world… I honestly don’t know. Probably Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Or I would send it to you so you could finally go on a holiday after six years! Perhaps you could then visit the Netherlands, and meet me! :D *huggles*

Dude, you totally know the second we’re ever in the same country, we’re going on an adventure! And if you ever come to eastern Canada, there will always be a place for you stay. :)

I’m very fortunate in that I get to live and breathe travel. (I’ll hide you in my suitcase?) As for the plane ticket question, I’d go somewhere to South America. :D

That first map photo has given me a GREAT idea for my wall decorations when I’m abroad. I’m going to get a map of the country I’m in and do that :D

If you do this map wall decoration, you know I will demand a picture. ;)

If I could go anywhere, the first place I’d go is Italy, with my boyfriend since he has tons of family there that he hasn’t seen in a really long time. My list would look a lot like yours, except with a bit of reordering. And I’ve been feeling the same way, especially after months of working on schoolwork and not even feeling like I had enough time to go out on the weekends. I just want a nice mini-vacation somewhere new, with lots of side streets to explore.

It’s awesome that you want to see Prague. Prague is mystic place! Here is so many beautiful places, really lot of amazing places, so I hope you will see it soon!

Ah, really?! I’m so jealous! My family has history in Czech Republic so I’m DYING to go there sometime. And from everything I’ve seen and read, Prague seems like such a beautiful city.

Wow! I have a bit of family in Canada or USA I’m not sure, but somewhere in america probably! I’m sad that I don’t know them, but well what can I do… :D So I am a bit jealous to you. :D
And I think all Czech Republic is beautiful, the nature, the cities, and we have good food! :D It’s not much healthy, but whatever. :D And yeah, they saying that we have awesome beer, but I don’t know I don’t like alcohol. :D Only one thing I don’t like so much are people :D But I am probably unobjective, because I was born here. :DD I think that people are nice only on foreigners. :D Maybe I just don’t know the right people… :DD Anyways…good for you. :DD
And yeah! If you will be here sometimes you can write me. I can be your guide here… :DD

What a coincidence that our families are from the places each other lives! Funny how that kind of stuff works out, isn’t it? But also kind of neat.

And thank you so much for the tour guide offer! Someday when I manage to get over there, I might have to take you up on it. And if you’re ever adventuring to eastern Canada, consider my tour guide services at your disposal as well. :D

Ally » 17 June 2010

It’s been six years since I went on vacation too and even then it was only to Disneyland, not very exotic. All these places look so fabulous, they would be on my list of places to visit as well… especially Australia, New Zealand, Greece, France, Italy, and well, all of the U.K. & Ireland. And I know what you mean about the “home away from home”/instantly in love with it feeling – I feel that way about England. I’ve always felt silly saying that, so it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one with that type of feeling.
As for the plane ticket anywhere, for right now, New Zealand.

I would love to go to all the places you mentioned and more! I want to go everywhere. But I know it’s not really realistic. I have been to various places in the USA (including Disneyland 5 times!) and to a little bit of Mexico on a cruise. My mom and I are going to Disneyworld in September. I am so happy. There isn’t really any place that I would DIE to go to. I think my top places would be NZ and Australia. :D

You know, I always wonder where people who live in Australia and New Zealand dream of visiting. Because to use North Americans (and probably a lot of Europeans as well), down under seems so “WOOOOAH”, for lack of a better word. I wonder what their “WOOOAH” dream destination is.

Marie » 17 June 2010

I’ve been pretty lucky in that I’ve left the country twice within the last year, but I am already starting to feel the desire to go on an exotic trip again. I’ve been to Greece multiple times since I have family there, and I really love it when people want to go there. It’s a beautiful country, and I really hope you get to go there one day. (: Other than that I’ve been to the USA, Mexico, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary (mostly on school trips). I basically want to go everywhere and anywhere, but my top destinations right now are Australia, France, Spain, China, the UK, California and the Netherlands. Traveling <3

Wow, I’m so jealous of all the wonderful places you got to visit through school! I went on a “Europe trip” in high school, but we didn’t see nearly as much as I would have liked. I hope some day very soon I’ll get to go on a big trip to lots and lots of countries over there. There’s so much history and diversity, two things we kind of lack over here which is a shame.

Sweet! Two of my top three destinations are on your list: Morocco and Czech Republic. (The third one for me is Turkey.)

Being someone who grew up with the idea of home being virtually everyone and nowhere at the same time, I believe that travelling is not necessarily because we can’t always have what we want, but perhaps we’re searching for something to soothe the hums of our soul, that Ultimate Meaning.

Either way, I hope that you find that time to go on vacation soon. Perhaps a graduation present?

Thanks for sharing this post with us!

Oops, spelling mistake there. I was meant to say “Being someone who grew up with the idea of home being virtually everywhere and nowhere at the same time..”, although of idea of someone reinforcing the idea of a home is actually plausible.

Marthe » 18 June 2010

Great list!

I have also been feeling restless lately, and it actually resulted in an impulse trip to Rome with my sister. We booked the tickets saturday evening and left sunday morning! I guess that’s the advantage of living in Europe, so many countries close by and cheap airfare.

I have been travelling a lot, mainly because I make it a priority. I think I have visited USA, England, France, Spain, Morrocco, Italy, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Hungary, Greece, Malta, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. And I live in Norway.

This summer I am going to spend 6 weeks in London for summer school and then travel a weekend to Paris. I’m hoping to visit India in December too.

The top of my list right now is India and Tokyo. I would also love to go to anywhere in the Caribbean, Australia and South Africa.

Hoping to make you feel better, you sooo don’t want to be in Greece right now, it’s boiling hot here. I am thinking of cold rocky caves and beaches right now!!And I want to visit each and every one of the countries in your list!!

Krissy » June 19th, 2010

I suppose that’s true! I probably wouldn’t be so keen about the extreme heat. A trip to Greece for me would probably be more of a “winter” months sort of trip or else I’d melt. haha

This is SUCH a great post. I feel you about wanting to travel, for me it seems like I haven’t gone anywehere for years (the last trip was 5 days to the sea, 6 months ago).
I’d totally pack and go anywhere right now (I know very little of my own country, Argentina), so no preferences. Although we share a lot of places: New Zeland, Australia, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Ireland… I need to win the lottery!

Amazing choices, I always think we Europeans on’t realise how lucky we are being so close to so many great countries. I would love to do an American Roadtrip (cheesy, I know!), visit Spain, maybe Croatia and Russia, do a trip round Scandinavia, maybe go really far North and see the Northern Lights… So many places so little time!

This is a wonderful list, and I love your photo selections as usual. The first one looks like a GREAT idea when I eventually have my own place. My boyfriend has been to 50+ countries and has a big archive of photos so he’d probably love it to death.

I have been to Ireland (many times), England and Czech. I believe I have been to that place in the Ireland photo and took a mediocre version of it. (oh yeah :D) I am not too fond of England, but I love Ireland and Czech. If you are going to visit Ireland some time, maybe we can do a meet up or something. ;)

Another place I think you’d love ( I am a bit surprised that it’s not on this list) is Japan. It is a pleasant country and they are extremely good at interior designs (actually most things to do with design). There is a good mix of appreciating the nature (they love flowers) and living the vibrant city life with fine things.
