This Moment… In June 2010

Ring

Playing… my brand new piano! I love it to pieces. I’ve also found a tonne of Regina Spektor, Fiona Apple and Tori Amos sheets online that I’ve been playing night and day.

Drinking… peach iced tea and pink lemonade by the gallon. The perfect summer refreshments!

Falling… more and more in love with my city every day. ♥

Listening… to lots and lots of Trespasser’s William. Their music is positively divine. See exhibit A: Lie in the Sound, B: Alone, and C: Weakening. I’ve also been listening to lots of Peter Broderick, The Postal Service, Death Cab for Cutie and Charlotte Gainsbourg this month.

Spending… every free minute I can spare in the company of friends.

Filling… my iCal to the brim! I don’t think it’s ever been so full. I honestly don’t know how I’d function on a regular basis without it.

Studying… once again for the summer. My semester started in the middle of this month and runs until the middle of August. I’m taking two classes: Design of the Built Environment B, and Survey of Contemporary Architecture.

Marathoning… one of the greatest shows of all-time: Buffy the Vampire Slayer! That show never gets old. (Anya, Spike and Willow are my favourite characters.)

Sleeping… oh, so irregularly. My body is still very disjointed from the move, and coupled with the stress of school, my internal sleep clock has been very spaztastic lately.

Learning… to use watercolour pencils. I’ve never tried them before and I’m in love! They create such a nice, soft texture.

Things That Made Me Happy This Month

Impromptu wanderings.

Hearing the first birds that have woken up in the morning chirping away.

Swinging so high on the swings that you feel like you want to barf.

Peeling lint strips out of the dryer.

When things turn out better than you’d anticipated.

Smelling all of the air fresheners in the store.

When my hair goes pretty!curly instead of frizzy!curly.

Everything.

The sound of scissors cutting through paper.

Watching the fog roll in from the harbour.

Finding much loved and long lost trinkets at the bottom of a box.

Gem stones.

How feathers feel between your fingers.

Flossing out the bits and pieces stuck in your teeth from eating corn on the cob.

Measuring things with a tape measure.

Boys that smile at me in the elevator.

That there are people in the world named “Bunny”.

Wallpapered ceilings.

Making french toast at 10:30 at night.

Blogging. I missed it.

Building a fluffy make-shift bed in the middle of my floor from copious amount of pillows and blankets, and snuggling up in said make-shift bed to watch Buffy all day long.

Invincible band-aids.

Australian accents.

Kiddie ice cream flavours. (Sprinkle cake + bubble gum = yum!)

Your blog is really nice! Love the writing and the pictures. What kind of piano do you have? I wish I could get a new one… the one I have is kind of loud and clanky. And Regina Spektor is probably my second favorite artist, ever.

Thanks, Abby!

And you’re a pianist too! :D That’s awesome! How long have you been playing? (Don’t mind my curiousity.)

I got a Yahama upright. I originally had a baby grand Steinway, but it wouldn’t fit in my new apartment so I traded it in for an upright. And I looove it to pieces.

I’ve been playing classical for about 10 years, but not seriously until a year or so ago. I’m actually majoring in piano in college. :)

So glad you love your new piano!

That’s so awesome! I did my first degree in piano as well! *high five* How far along are you in your degree? What are you planning on doing post-college?

Abby Ang » July 2nd, 2010

I’m going to be a sophomore in the fall, so not very far along! My teacher is awesome and I’m really learning a lot.

That’s awesome that you got your first degree in piano as well! Do you still play in public now and then? I have no idea what I’m going to do post-college, but I’m also getting a degree in English because I love writing as well.

I don’t play a lot any more. I do weddings and various events and such, but I’m not really actively pursuing any performance stuff. While I love playing and playing for others, I later realized it wasn’t my big passion in life. So its’ more just a “fun” thing for me now. :)

Good luck with the rest of your studies! I loved doing my degree. You’re going to learn sooo much!

Who’s your favourite composer to play? I think my favourites are Schumann (by far), Chopin and Debussy.

And sorry for the interrogation! I just get a little over excited about finding fellow pianists. ;)

Abby Ang » July 2nd, 2010

No problem! I got so excited when you mentioned your piano, so I guess we’re even! I know what you mean… even though we may be really talented at something, it’s no indication that we should pursue that as a main goal in life. :) I am playing a Chopin Impromptu right now, and it is so hard! Really pretty, though. I think my favorites to play are Beethoven and Debussy (yay!). What’s hard for me is that I had a bad teacher for so many years and didn’t learn proper technique, so now I have to start relearning pieces with proper technique. *sigh*

I don’t think I’ve played any Schumann yet. :( at least nothing really advanced.

Ooo, *the* Chopin Impromptu? As in, Fantasie Impromptu? I looove that one. I learned it once for fun because I adore the middle section to pieces, but never really studied it or anything.

I feel your pain on the technique thing for sure. That happened to me, too. Apparently I have terrible posture in my hands, and I never really learned how to count. XD So now I have a bad, bad habit of just picking something up and playing it based on how I think it should sound instead of actually picking it apart properly.

If you get a chance, you should check out Schumann’s Papillons and Scenes from Childhood. Papillons especially is SO much fun to play.

Abby Ang » July 3rd, 2010

Nope, actually. It’s one in Ab. I really wish I could learn the Fantasie though. My piano teacher plays it really well.

Haha, I actually have the same problems – my counting is all messed up and my hands aren’t quite right. Ooh, I’ve heard Papillons. A fellow student in college played it for a recital! It sounds like such a fun piece.

As you will see, I’m a Crystal Light addict. Peach Iced Tea, Pink Lemonade… and every other flavour under the sun. ;) But hey, it makes me drink water so it’s all good.

Krissy, I think one of my favorite things you do is make those happy lists. They’re always so inspiring and I think I should do the same — they’d be so good to do.

Brilliant, my dear.

Aw, thanks Brandi! You should give writing your own list a try sometime! Maybe it seems a bit trivial at times, but I’ve found they help me a lot with trying to see the positives. :D
