Since I just started back to university again, I’ve started thinking on where I find my inspiration, what inspires me, and ultimately, what my personal voice is as a designer. To really answer that question, I had to go to the root of my love of interior design: designer Sarah Richardson. Without even a second thought, she is my number 1 inspiration. Sharing is Caring… Day 3: A Book
I thought I’d stir things up a little bit here with a non-fiction book. I think most people were expecting actual literature, but I’m going to go with something a little different: Atlanta Bartlett’s At Home with White, an interior design book focusing on using the colour white in your home.

When fairy tales meet interior design, magic happens. Welcome to the wonderfully quaint, dreamy and girlie apartment of Elodie, a Parisian interior architect/designer whose lovely little apartment is the epitome of space small living: it’s only 280 square feet! Every nook and cranny is decked out with both aesthetically pleasing, and practical elements that make her space all her own. Her apartment is so wonderfully quaint and dreamy that I’m ready to move in yesterday!

I’d been meaning to make a post dedicated to my latest design crush – black ♥ – for a few months now, but have kept putting it off for no apparent reason. But in keeping with the Halloween spirit around here lately, now seemed like the ideal time to delve into the darkest shade of the colour spectrum.
In terms of interior design, I’d say black is by far the most misunderstood colour. It’s generally accepted as far too harsh for use in the home. In a world where colour associations are so closely bound to a particular shade, I can easily see why most shy away from black. After all, when considered in the strictest of contexts, black is associated with death, depression, drama, angst. It has a tendency to completely absorb colour and doesn’t reflect back any light. For those willing to shed these pre-disposed cultural connotations for black, let’s take a little adventure to the dark side. (You’re imagining Darth Vader while reading this now, aren’t you?)
