When I Think Of Winter

Sometimes around this time of year, when winter seems to be dragging on and on, we just need to be reminded of all the beauty that surrounds us. I know for where I am, we’re unlikely to see hints of spring poking its nose through for another 6 or 7 weeks. So why not embrace all the loveliness that winter has to offer us? Perhaps I’m blinded by my love of the season (I’ve never been one of those people who counts down the days until sunshiney weather) but I can’t help but swoon over icicles hanging off the porch, or snowflakes getting caught in the window screens. In those moments before they’re disturbed by snowploughs and passing cars, they hold such a pristine and almost angelic beauty.

And because no winter gush is complete without it, Tori Amos’ song Winter. Though it’s technically about her father, it has some beautiful metaphors and references to winter scenes. So lovely. ♥ It’s one of my all-time favourite Tori songs, and songs in general. Hard to believe it’s almost 18 years old! (It was released in 1992.) It’s still as lovely and enchanting as ever.

Hard to believe the day’s almost upon us! I swear, yesterday was October. It’s as if November and December ceased to exist amidst all the madness of university and holiday preparations. And I just wanted to wish you all and your loved ones a happy Christmas and holiday season! You guys are all so awesome, and I really hope you have a wonderful Christmas! ♥ Don’t eat too many holiday treats; save some for the big guy up north. ;)

Happy Christmas! I’ve got my fingers crossed for a white one! The only thing standing in my way is the weather forecast for tomorrow – rain. It had better not wash away all our snow or I’ll be very disappointed. Then, I guess I’ll just have to stick with paper snowflakes.

I’ve been so wrapped up with university lately that I haven’t had the time to properly prepare myself for the holidays just yet. Appalling, I know, with only a little over a week before the big day. I raided my closet for Christmas decorations this afternoon and look what I found…

… my beloved Care Bears snow globe! ♥ It doesn’t match any of my parents’ Christmas decorations, but I’ve positioned it on our coffee table none the less as it has a special place in my heart. My best friend gave it to me one Christmas when I was eight or nine, and I put it out every year. It’s just one of those special trinkets I’ll always hang on to.

And what would the Christmas season be without Tchaichovsky’s Nutcracker? It’s such a beautiful suite, and it always puts me in the holiday spirit. Waltz of the Flowers is my favourite. I’m disappointed that I didn’t get to see a ballet production of it this season as I usually do. I’m hoping they’ll air it on television.

What puts you in that happy Christmassy state of mind? Do you have any special holiday traditions?

We had our first major snow fall here today! I woke up to a good 3-4 inches! Horray! I love snow so much – possibly beyond a natural amount – so it was a pleasant surprise.

And in celebration of this happy event (happy for me, anyway), a fun little song called “Icicles” by Let’s Go Sailing.

The only thing that puts a damper on my spirits are the mountains upon mountains of drawings I still have to do for finals. Le sigh. Unfortunately, when you go to a school in San Francisco, California, a ‘snow day’ is no excuse for not completing your work on time. If only.

Now I need to get myself back in focus mode!

I ♥ Winter

It took every possible ounce of strength, self-control and restraint to wait until at least December to roll around before I posted this. And I really wanted to wait until the first official day of winter, but I can’t hold it in any more… It’s almost winter! Horray! I love winter. ♥ It’s one of my favourite seasons.ⁱ There’s something so magical about it. And I have so happy memories from growing up that are associated with winter – building forts and having snow ball wars, tobogganing, leaving out ‘treats’ for the animalsⁱⁱ, drinking hot chocolate, bed time stories wrapped up in woolly blankets. Just thinking about it makes me feel all warm and squishie inside!

So, my lovelies, what’s your favourite thing about winter? Even if you’re not a winter fan, there has to be something you like about it. Mittens? Watching snowflakes from the comfort of your home? Going south to avoid it all-together? :P

Though I suppose I say that about every season, except summer. Can you have three favourite seasons? Or is that a little excessive?
When I was younger, I was convinced that the animals celebrated Christmas, and I always had to leave them all treats like I did for Santa and his reindeer. I didn’t want them to feel left out of the holiday cheer. :P
