23rd May 2011 in Music

Lately, I’ve become quite obsessed with getting my hands on a turntable. I’ve wanted one for quite some time, but it’s completely consumed me lately. Every time I’m out, I find myself gravitating to this one second hand shop and perusing all of the records. There are so many gems to be found – Simon & Garfunkel, Ella Fitzgerald, Gershwin, The Bee Gees, Billy Joel, Debussy! – but unfortunately, they’re just out of my reach as I don’t have a player myself. I think I’d really enjoy one though… Nothing beats listening to the classics the way they were meant to be heard. (Little known fact about me: I love jazz, big band and the blues. I totally wish I would have been born in the 20′s so I could have been an age to really appreciate the music of the 40′s.) It seems a bit ridiculous saying this, but I’ve already made an in-my-head Christmas wishlist with “Turntable” right at the top.

16th May 2011 in Mixology

I haven’t posted one of my monthly mixes in awhile, so I thought it was high time to sneak one in around these parts. For those needing a wee bit of catching up, in addition to making themed mixes, I keep a playlist for each month of songs I’m in love with at the time and name said playlist after something happening in my personal life – almost like a sort of music diary for the month. In this case, I present to you my April 2011 mix of songs I was super-duper-can’t-tear-me-away obsessed with.

21st April 2011 in Mixology

Music has a huge effect over our moods. I’ll be the first to admit that when I’m in a less than cheerful mood, I head straight for the tunes that will make my heart ache even more. We all do it. When we have our hearts broken, we head not for something uplifting to improve our mood, but for the songs that will make us curl up in a ball and sob even harder than before. Self deprecation, you are a sly little minx. Long story short, after a conversation on this very topic via Twitter with Marthe, it got me to thinking… “Self, you need a super, duper feel good kind of mix. Something that will instantly fill you with joy and plaster a ginormous grin on your face within minutes.” And so this little ball of happiness I like to call a mix was born.

27th March 2011 in Mixology

Prepare yourselves for the most epic mixtape of all time. Because its epicness is twofold:

1. It is epic in length coming in at 33 tracks, and a grand total of 2 hours and 27 minutes of playing time!

2. The music itself is epic. I created this mixtape as a means to introduce a friend to soft, ambient, and chill-out type music, ie: my kind of music. And these are my most favourite songs by my favourite artists.
